Tan Accelerators FAQ:

What is a Tan Accelerator?

Tanning accelerators or tan promoters (not to be confused with self tanner) are methods that include either a lotion or pills to help increase the levels of melanin in the skin which causes the outer layer of the skin to darken naturally when exposed to UV rays.

This involves either laying in a tanning bed or sunbathing in the actual sun itself. While these methods are popular they are not healthy for the skin and can cause serious skin damage and possibly skin cancer.

What are the Ingredients in Most Tanning Accelerators?

Tanning promoters (accelerators) often contain one or both of the following ingredients, Psoralen and Tyrosine.

  • Psoralen-an amino acid that comes from plant sources and citrus oils. It triggers skin cells to produce more melanin.
  • Tyrosine-an amino acid that is said to stimulate skin cells to produce more melanin. It is fat soluble.

Are They Safe To Use?

It should be noted that there is NO SAFE way to get a sun tan. Neither psoralen nor tyrosine are FDA approved and they do cause your skin to be more sensitive to light. That being said, they do work which is why people continue to do it but any direct UV exposure without sunscreen is dangerous and not recommended.

What is the Difference Between a Bronzer and Accelerator?

A bronzer is a more or less temporary cosmetic type tanning lotion because it gives an immediate darkening to the skin via a water soluble dye or DHA. They tend to last for a couple of days depending on shower frequency as this will fade them. There are varying shades of bronzer tanning lotions available but be sure and go with a shade or two darker than your skin tone. If you go to dark your skin will just look “dirty” and not tanned. Bronzers tend to work for several hours after application.

Accelerators on the other hand help promote melanin production naturally which in turn makes the skin tan and beautiful looking.

What Are Tan Maximizers?

This is another word for tanning accelerators and does the same thing. They penetrate the skin to stimulate melanin production to produce a deep dark tan. There are some tanners that have “tingle” in them and these are called Tingle lotions. They make the skin feel warm and raise blood flow to the surface of the skin which helps maximize the tanning process. These tingle lotions are not recommended for fair skinned people.

Should I Wear Sunscreen with Tanning Accelerators?

If you are going to do any sunbathing or have any exposure to UV light then an sunscreen with SPF of preferably 30 or higher is ALWAYS recommended. This goes for tanning lotion, accelerator or any every day facial moisturizer/lotion. You need to realize that while the sun can be good for you it is also your biggest nemesis and enemy in the aging and fight against skin cancer.

What is the Best Tan Accelerator on the Market

It is impossible to name one as the best tanning accelerator because there are tons of them that perform well. As long as it contains Psoralen or Preferably Tyrosine which is fat soluble then you have your hands on a good accelerator lotion. We recommend you look for one that has an broad spectrum SPF of at least 30 if you are going to be exposed to UV light (sun or manufactured)
